Have you ever heard anyone saying that ”we didn’t have all these disorders back then”? I have heard many people saying that all these disorders are either a creation of today’s society or they have been manufactured by doctors and drug companies in order to make more money. That is one of the most ignorant opinions that you could ever hear being phrased. Mental illnesses and disorders were present since the beginning of human life. But, the world of medicine was not always as advanced and progressed as today, which left people undiagnosed and untreated. If someone had Down syndrone, they would just call them ‘slow’ or even worse ‘dumb’. Even today, there is such huge stigma that follows mental disorders, that few people fully understand the meaning of them and how they affect people. We need more lessons about mental disorders and not only through movies and television.
Graphic designer Eisen Bernardo was inspired by Project Semicolon, which emphasizes on mental illness.
This project was launched in 2013 and used the semicolon as a symbol of support to those who struggled with mental disorders and addiction.
Eisen chose the paperclip as the symbol of supporting the same cause and used it to depict how each disorder forms itself.
The paperclip along with colors were his tools in exploring and representing each disorder.
Post-traumatic Stress Disorder
His goal is to cause awareness and understanding about mental disorders.
His minimalistic designs aim to show the identity of the symptoms of each disorder.
He chooses carefully the colors for each disorder and the amount of paperclips based on the symptoms.
The reason he chose the paperclip is because it is an object that keeps things together, but can also be twisted in the most unexpected ways.
Dissociative Identity Disorder
Mental illness and disorders are serious issues that you should not try to hide from society, but face them with great courage. It can happen to anyone and your life will not stop moving forward if you get diagnosed. Talk to a professional and seek medical help. There is absolutely no reason why you can’t lead a normal life.
