Michelangelo has always been considered as one of the greatest artists of all time. His abilities spanned over paintings, sculpting, architecture and poetry. David was his all-time masterpiece in sculpting and depicts a naked standing David (who is a biblical hero), who was a popular subject amongst artists in Florence. The statue is said to show David after he has made the decision to fight Goliath, but before the battle has actually taken place. The statue is a Renaissance interpretation of a common ancient Greek theme of the standing heroic male nude. What’s highly commendable is the details of the sculpture and how much attention they have been shown, being more than perfect.
Close up to his right hand.
His left hand holding a cloth.
His impeccably made feet.
This statue shows David before finally taking a rock and killing goliath with a hit in the head.
The sculpture now resides in Galleria dell’Accademia in Florence, Italy.
Over 8 million people visit the magnificent piece of art yearly and pay attention to the small details.
David took Michelangelo something more than 2 years to complete (1501-1504) and it weighs 5,660kg (12,478 lbs) and has a height of 5 meters (17 feet).
The statue came to symbolize the defence of civil liberties embodied in the Republic of Florence, an independent city-state threatened on all sides by more powerful rival states and by the hegemony of the Medici family.
