Dubai is most known for its super tall skyscrapers and its increased level of wealth. However, there is another characteristic that not all travel guides show and it concerns the massive sandstorms that hide the roads and change the color of Dubai’s atmosphere. This is an aspect that most of you aren’t aware of, but people living in the UAE are constantly in ‘war’ with sand, dust and sandstorms, which make their lives unbearable. What’s pretty great as an image, but awful practically, is how the sand covers the roads leading to Dubai making it difficult to reach the city. Photographer Irenaeus Herok decided to dedicate some time and explore this side of Dubai that’s not all that pleasant.
The sandstorms in the UAE can appear during any time of the year and in unexpected moments.
Most of the times the cars are able to ride over the sand, but this is still quite dangerous since they can’t see the road underneath.
The dust and sand can last for days and gets into people’s houses through the cracks making their existence pretty hazardous.
Sandstorms are usually dangerous and so big in the desert and not that much in cities like Dubai, where the biggest repercussion is a polluted and unbearable atmosphere.
In the most serious cases of sandstorms, flights get delayed or cancelled depending on the severity of the situation.
In the worst case of sandstorm that hit Dubai and Abu Dhabi in 2015, many accidents were reported in the streets and people suffered from difficulty in breathing properly.
During the worst sandstorm that has appeared in UAE, visibility was blocked at even 500 meters ahead.
If you ever plan to visit the UAE, keep in mind that you might encounter these types of problems with dust and sand. This means that you should be prepared and have packed a face mask to cover yourself in case of a sandstorm.
